Chapter 1-5 Chapter 1- Huckleberry moves in with Widow Douglas but then runs away because he doesn't like having to be civilized. Chapter 2- Huck sneaks out of the house and go meet their new gang to make rules. Chapter 3- Huck goes home. Rumors are going around saying Huck's dad is dead because he hasn't been seen in a year. Chapter 4- Huck is adjusting to his new life and then he finds foot prints in the sow belonging to his dad, then his dad shows up in his bedroom. Chapter 5- Huck's dad, Pap, goes to jail after a drunken spree, following a custody battle of Huck.
Huckleberry Finn takes place when slavery was around in the 1830's- 1840's. The narrator tells the story through the eyes of Huckleberry Finn in the first person.
Chapter 5-11
1. Pap started a court case to try to get Huck's $6,000. Pap locked Huck up because he needs to keep him around so he will give him money. 2.
3. An abolitionist is someone who favors slavery. Huck does not want to be called this because slavery is very common at this time, especially in the south where this book is placed. 4. The things that gave Huck away are how fidgety he is and his answers are inconsistent. In modern time if a girl would try to pretend she was a girl some things that would giver her away are her body, her facial structure, and her voice. If a guy were to pretend to be a girl somethings that would give him away are his body, facial hair, and his voice.
Chapter 12-16
1. Soloman had a child and two different women tried to claim it, he suggested that they split the child in two knowing the real mother would rather give up the child than split it. Huck remembers the widow telling him this story and knows that Soloman never really wanted to split the child in half but Jim did not understand. 2. When Huck finds Jim he tries to trick Jim into thinking that it was all a dream. Jim still insists that it was real. This shows us how gullible Jim proving he is not very smart. 3. Slaves did not have any freedom so they had to express themselves in other ways, such as superstition. 1. This tells us that Huck is not familiar with being friendly with slaves but wants to be honest. 4. Huck is trying to hide Jim from the people he has met, but he is having trouble. He eventually gets away from the men looking for the escaped slaves.
Chapter 17-21
Describe the Grangford Family The Grangerford's are a weird family. At first they seem like a normal farming family with a lot of people in the family and most of them guys. If you meet them at their home it is a different story. When Huck met them they were so protective they had guns pointed at him and everything. Turns out they have a 30 year feud with with a ranching family across the way who have been killing each other ever since the feud started. The Grangerford's also had a young daughter who was very passionate towards others and a very talented artist and poet who died at a young age due to sickness. Why would Mark Twain include the farmer-rancher beef and what does it tell us about them He included it just to show us what the times were like back then. Feuds and family to family disagreements were way more common in the day and they were more violent too. Another reason he would include it is to "expose" how people just blindly follow what others do. In the book Buck liter says that he has no idea why they are still fighting and that both families have no idea why it even started. I see any satire more as we progress through the book things like this I feel are hoping up more and more. How does the POV change what we are seeing and feeling during this section As still being a young boy such a big conflict with gruesome violence would be rather unsettling. This is especially so since he knew one of the familys and saw the one boy his age dead. Being so young and knowing the family would give him plenty reason not to want to talk about the battle. Also he thought the whole feud was that it was pointless and that they families had no reason to be fighting. Who are the King and the duke and why does Huck go with the story The real Duke is the Duke of Bridgewater. The real King is the King of France, but neither of these men were dukes or kings but rather normal folk who were on the run same as Huck and Jim. The only reason Huck plays along is because there was no need to not to, what they were asking was not a lot and if it kept everyone happy with each other then it was good enough for Huck. He was okay with playing along and Jim didn't know any better so everything was good with him. What are the issues with the Dukes solution to day rafting The Dukes plan was to tie Jim up like he was a prisoner if people were about and then if they asked about Jim they would show them a wanted paper with Jim on it and say they were on their way to turn him in. One issue I see with this is Getting Jim bound up before people realized he was actually getting returned. Maybe they weren't paying attention and then someone noticed. Another thing is maybe they see Jim and then they want the reward for themselves and attack them and take Jim. This could easily happen since 200 dollars is a lot of money so people would be more inclined to take advantage of the situation. Another thing is just having Jim visible in general, have a black person out in the open floating down a river would seem kind of suspicious so you never know what will happen.
Chapter 22-26
1. The line at the end of the handbill states "Ladies and children are not admitted". The handbill would get people into the play because more men would be open to doing things of their choice if their wives didn't have a say in their decision. Which provides the husbands and fathers a good old night for the boys.
2.
Huck doesn't see the use in telling Jim about the fact that the King and Duke aren't telling the truth because Jim doesn't know a lot about Kings and Dukes in the first place, with that he would not understand if he did tell him the truth. Also he doesn't know he is protecting Jim by playing along with the King and Dukes.
When Huck mentions the phrase “you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.” he is comparing the King and Duke to real royalty and the way they act compared to those positions. Throughout the story, Huck explains multiple examples of historical royalty and how they have tricked people throughout their "royal positioning". Therefore if Huck did tell Jim the truth, he wouldn't know how to tell the difference from the real Kings and Dukes.
3.The King and the Duke came up with this plan when they had found out that a man named Peter Wilks had died and left a fortune to his brothers, that no one had ever met. One was around 30-35 while the other was deaf and stupid. The two con-men pretended to be the brothers and made Huck and Jim act as their servants. They wanted to sell the land and gain all of his money from the dead man and his brothers. Huck was ashamed about lying and stealing from the grieving family.
4. Doctor Robinson knew that the King and Duke were both frauds because when the King gave his speech, his British accent was not believable. The Doctor said that it was the worst accent that he had ever heard. He knew that the King and Duke were con-men and were not related to Peter Wilks.
5. The King and the Duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the $6,000 in gold. Instead the King comes to think it would be a good idea to stay until the land as well as the slaves are sold, therefore they can get more money than they have got already.
Chapter 27-30 1.Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? (Chapter 27) The act of guarding a dead person from time of death until time of burial is known as "Shemira". The main reason that they had a guard or multiple guards was to protect the body from rodents and insects eating the body. It was done out of respect for the dead.
2.What do we learn (or reaffirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? (Chapter 28) Huck could not bear to see Mary Jane as upset that she was when she was reacting to the slaves family being split a part. She was extremely upset and Huck had noticed this. He also knew she was struggling with the death because he saw her crying alone by the casket. He wanted to make her feel better so he told her that the slaves will not be separated forever. This shows us how nice he is and empathetic.
3.What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? (Chapter 29) When the two real brothers arrived it caused an issue and the lawyer decided to preform a writing test to see who the frauds were. He had the four men all sign a paper to compare those signatures to past letters. The test showed that the King and the Duke were frauds but the King complained to the lawyer saying it wasn't accurate since the real Harvey's hand was broken, and his brother serves as a scribe to him, they wouldn't be able to prove who is who. Then the real Harvey says that he knows of a tattoo on his brothers chest that no one else would know of. He also says that the man who dressed the body would back him up on it. Both the King and Harvey give detailed descriptions of the tattoo and the undertaker who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo. It surprised everyone. They decide to dig up the body to see which is right and then find the bag of $6000.
Chapter 31-35 1. Huck says “You can’t pray a lie.” What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean? (Chapter 31) Huck wanted to pray for forgiveness about helping Jim escape. It was illegal to help a black person escape it's owner. He knew it was wrong and tried to pray for forgiveness but decided he didn't really want forgiveness because he didn't believe that he did anything wrong.
2.Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? (Chapter 31) Huck decided to write a letter to Tom telling him to let Miss Watson know where Jim is at. He wrote the letter but then in the midst of praying he reminisced on how kind-hearted and good of a friend Jim had been to him. He then decided he would rather take a chance in order to stand by Jim. He tore up the letter so that Miss Watson would never know where Jim is
3.Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!” What do you think of this? (Chapter 33) I think that Huck was surprised and caught of guard by the new actions Tom is displaying. Tom Sawyer went from being a guy who wanted to create a gang to steal and kill people to helping a slave escape. Tom always did what he thought was cool and wanted approval from others. I think it is sad that it was such a big deal to help someone just because their skin color was different.
4.Huck says two things at the end of chapter 33: -“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.” -“But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t go no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” What does Huck mean by these two statements? Huck is talking about the fact that it was partially his fault that the King and the Duke got caught and tied to a rail by their feet. Huck is saying that no matter what actually happened your conscience will always rule over the truth.
5.Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? (Chapter 34) Tom and Huck chose to free Jim in a much more difficult way than was necessary. Huck proposed his plan but Tom responded back saying it was too simple. They decided to add more style and if Tom was going to help steal a slave he had to do it with his special flare.
Chapter 36-40 1.In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom’s motivation? What is Huck’s motivation? (Why are they doing it?) I think that Tom and Huck had different intentions when breaking Jim free. Tom just wanted to pull off the best break out in history and be famous. Huck, however, just wanted Jim to be free again and not locked up. He cared about him and felt badly he was captured.
2.What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they “let on” about something? Why do they do this? (Begins on chapter 37) They covered up the rat holes for this lady and they are telling everyone about what a nice thing they did for the lady.
3.Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle’s slave? What are his motivations for this? (Chapter 39) Huck doesn't want the slaves to go through the same thing that Jim did. His motivation was Jim. He gave his aunt an uncles slaves instructions because he wanted them to be safe.
4.We’ve worked a great deal on this novel’s satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim’s escape by Tom and Huck satire? They did it the hard way instead of the easier way to do it. They wanted to make sure that they wouldn't get in trouble, but it was also not an easier plan.
5.Towards the end of the chapter Huck says “I knowed he was white inside” about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean? I think he said that because Jim acts like a white man and he doesn't get treated how a white man gets treated.
Chapter 41-end
Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way? In this part of the story Huck ran into Uncle Silas in town and took him back to the house and Huck made up a story of why Tom and Huck were gone, they believed it. When Huck said he was going to bed, Aunt Sally followed and tucked him in. Huck then felt guilty and couldn't look her in her eyes because he knew that Tom was stuck in pain and in danger while he was sleeping in a bed. I also think Huck felt this way because he knew that he lied about Jim and everything and could tell that in the end he was hurting the family rather than making things better.
In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him? Aunt Sally sees Tom being carried on a mattress with the help of the doctor and a tied up runaway slave. She thought Tom was dead but he eventually woke up. Aunt sally asked the doctor what had happened and he explained that when he had got to Tom that he realized he couldn't get the bullet out on his own and he needed help but he wasn't going to leave the bot there on his own. So overall this is an example that Jim has come closer to Tom and Huck and cares a lot about their health and overall safety and would do anything to save them even if it puts his freedom at risk. They all agreed that Jim acted with kindness and that without him putting his freedom at risk then Tom would've been dead.
What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)? Tom was happy that he now has good story to tell about how he got shot in the calf helping a slave escape.
You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck.Huck has shown many thing about him throughout this novel. From the beginning we see that Huck realizes that his father is a bad influence therefore he should escape. Then later he meets Jim and doesn't see the color of his skin like everybody else, he sees a great friend. Overall, Huck has shown that he really does care about his friends and the people around him.
